New York Men’s Junior College News

The BCANY has named its 4th annual All-New Yrok State Junior College Team (listed elsewhere in the newsletter). Herkimer County Community College head coach Matt Lee was named BCANY Junior College Coach of the Year while Herkimer’s Akeem Ellis was the BCANY Junior College Player of the Year. As with all BCANY awards, coaches must be members in order for them or their players to be eligible for consideration.

Monroe College, Monroe Community College, Herkimer County Community College, and Sullivan County Community College all advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournaments in their respective divisions. Monroe College of the Bronx finished in 7th place in the Division I tournament in Hutchinson, KS, while Monroe Community College of Rochester competed in the Division II tournament in Danville, IL. Herkimer and Sullivan finished 4th and 6th respectively in the Division III tournament in Delhi, NY. BCANY Player of the Year Akeem Ellis was named a 1st Team Division III All-American by the NJCAA. Corey Jackson of Fashion Institute of Technology was named to the Division III 2nd team, while Bradley Griffin of Mohawk Valley Community College and Moses Dayee of Sullivan County Community College were honorable mention selections. In Division II, Leon Nelson of Genesee Community College was named a 2nd Team All-American by the NJCAA, while God’s Gift Achiuwa of Erie Community College and Raheem Singleton of Monroe Community College were named to the 3rd Team. Robrto Colonette of ASA was an Honorable Mention selection in Division I.

In other junior college news, this season marked the 20th and final time that SUNY Delhi hosted the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. The tournament will remain in New York State, however, as Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake will take over as tournament hosts in 2011.

WHS on probation after state violation

By JAMIE MUNKS

TIMES STAFF WRITER

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2010

The Watertown City School District athletic department has been placed on probation by the Frontier League for violating a state rule that prohibits alumni from practicing with school sports teams.
After reading a Dec. 1 Times story about a scrimmage between the Watertown High School boys basketball team and a group of alumni, someone from another school district sent e-mails to Frontier League officials about Watertown’s violation of the state rule, District Superintendent Terry Fralick said at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting.
Fralick declined to say which district the person was from.
Board members voiced their anger that someone contacted the Frontier League to notify them of the Watertown violation.

“That just stinks and shame on whoever did that,” board member Cynthia Bufalini said.
Fralick said the rule has “been on the books for years, but isn’t enforced all the time.” Fralick is a member of the Frontier League executive committee, and he has told the other committee members that the district apologizes for the violation and that it won’t happen again.
Being on probation in the Frontier League means that Watertown High School has been identified as a school that broke a state rule. If another state rule is broken, the league would take disciplinary action on the team that could include forced game forfeits.
“With all of the things that are wrong in the world, we’re being penalized for this?” board member Yvonne Gebo said. “As an educator, one of the best things you can see is when kids leave this building and they want to come back to see their coaches.”

Violation of rule seldom reported

ALUMNI AT PRACTICE: Frontier League teams may have broken law

By JAMIE MUNKS

TIMES STAFF WRITER

TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 2010

The state law that Watertown High School violated when it allowed alumni to practice with its high school boys basketball team, may be violated much more often than it’s reported, Frontier League and state athletic officials said.
Watertown High School’s athletic department was recently put on probation by the Frontier League for violating the state rule when a group of alumni played against the boys basketball team in a scrimmage. The rule prohibits graduated athletes from practicing with their former team.
“If you’re not an approved player, you’re not eligible to practice with the team,” Frontier League Executive Director Robert Kowalick said.
This violation isn’t one that is often reported to the Frontier League, Kowalick said.
“I think it’s the first violation we’ve given out for this,” Kowalick said. “But this has probably gone on. I think it’s been pretty common for kids to come home from college and want to practice with their old team.”
And while the violation may occur frequently, the executive committee doesn’t look into violations until it receives a letter.
“We’re not going to go chasing people around. A lot of people will complain to us about someone doing something wrong, but it’s an anonymous letter or a phone call,” Kowalick said. “If you’re going to complain about something, it’s got to be in writing.”
Kowalick said he sent a reminder about the rule to all Frontier League school districts on Dec. 1, the same day the story about a scrimmage between the Watertown High School boys basketball team playing against a group of alumni ran in the Times.
“It’s unfortunate that this incident happened,” Kowalick said. “When we get something in writing we have to look into it, and Watertown knows that..”
The basis of the rule is for liability purposes, and it has been on the books “forever,” said Nina Van Erk, executive director of the New York Public High School Athletic Association.
The state Education Commissioner’s regulations state that schools should “limit athletic activities conducted by the school to appropriate competition and practice between pupils in grades seven through 12, except that a post-graduate pupil may participate in intramural activities.”
“We’re required by the state to only provide athletic opportunities between students because high school athletics are an extension of the classroom,” Van Erk said. “Many schools have ignored this over time. But now we do mandatory athletic director workshops and there’s no excuse, everyone knows the rule.”

Every Varsity basketball coach whose school is within the NYSPHSAA needs to take action to help the effort to Bring Back the Games! Do not rely on others. Every coach is effected by the reduction in the number of games and every coach needs to take a stand.

Make your thoughts and concerns known to your Athletic Director and school Administrators. You can use ideas from the BCANY Bring Back the Games position paper. Below are also some “talking points” that might be helpful to you. Please do this as soon as possible as the procedure to get the two game back must come through the Athletic Council of each Section.

Bring Back the Games

These are highlights of the complete Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc., position paper.

While we are seeking the restoration of the two basketball games for the
2010-2011 season, we are in support of restoring the number of allowable contests for all sports.

1. With the 18 game schedule New York now plays fewer games than all other states in the United States except for Nebraska. Competing with athletes across America for basketball scholarships, NYSPHSAA member athletes now are at a distinct disadvantage by playing so few games. No other state has cut games state wide.

2. The loss of games now puts members of the NYPHSAA at a disadvantage when compared to the number of games played by other organizations in the state (AIS, CHSAA, and NYC-PSAL). Yet NYSPHSAA teams are expected to compete for the Federation titles in basketball despite the fact that they are now
playing 25% fewer games than the other organizations.

3. Some NYSPHSAA teams are losing players to teams in the AIS and CHSAA which offer them more opportunities to play. 25% more now.

4. Many in season tournaments which have raised money for worthy charities have been adversely affected since those are the games that are usually dropped first. League games take precedence.

5. Booster clubs have lost valuable opportunities to raise funds. Booster clubs which can help an athletic department offset their costs.

6. The reduction in allowable contests decision further diminishes the role that high school sports and their coaches play in the lives of basketball players. Non- school related teams and programs are on the rise. While some non-school programs are credible, many are not, which is not good for the athlete.
7. The cuts have not impacted all sports equally. Many sports do not schedule as many game/contest as they are allowed to. Also because of weather restrictions some sports do not play their full schedule, when others, like basketball, usually schedule all possible games.

8. There are other ways to offset the costs of games including creative scheduling and transportation by individual sections or school districts. BCANY has a great idea for offsetting the costs- an endowment game held by
two rival schools with proceeds going toward the state. Other states such as North Carolina [and Ohio] have raised millions of dollars for athletics with these types of contests.

9. Scholastic athletic contests are a tradition in hundreds of communities across New York State. As coaches and educators we value these traditions and opportunities for our student athletes and the communities they represent and play in. We are now losing two of these opportunities per season and as educators we should be offering more of these positive experiences and opportunities for the athletes, not less.
