New York Men’s Junior College News

The BCANY has named its 4th annual All-New Yrok State Junior College Team (listed elsewhere in the newsletter). Herkimer County Community College head coach Matt Lee was named BCANY Junior College Coach of the Year while Herkimer’s Akeem Ellis was the BCANY Junior College Player of the Year. As with all BCANY awards, coaches must be members in order for them or their players to be eligible for consideration.

Monroe College, Monroe Community College, Herkimer County Community College, and Sullivan County Community College all advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournaments in their respective divisions. Monroe College of the Bronx finished in 7th place in the Division I tournament in Hutchinson, KS, while Monroe Community College of Rochester competed in the Division II tournament in Danville, IL. Herkimer and Sullivan finished 4th and 6th respectively in the Division III tournament in Delhi, NY. BCANY Player of the Year Akeem Ellis was named a 1st Team Division III All-American by the NJCAA. Corey Jackson of Fashion Institute of Technology was named to the Division III 2nd team, while Bradley Griffin of Mohawk Valley Community College and Moses Dayee of Sullivan County Community College were honorable mention selections. In Division II, Leon Nelson of Genesee Community College was named a 2nd Team All-American by the NJCAA, while God’s Gift Achiuwa of Erie Community College and Raheem Singleton of Monroe Community College were named to the 3rd Team. Robrto Colonette of ASA was an Honorable Mention selection in Division I.

In other junior college news, this season marked the 20th and final time that SUNY Delhi hosted the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. The tournament will remain in New York State, however, as Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake will take over as tournament hosts in 2011.
