Irvington turns out to celebrate as Gina Maher gets NY record 800th girls basketball win

Maher, who became head coach of the Irvington program for the 1975-76 season, won her 800th girls basketball game with Irvington on February 1st, 2024. At the final buzzer, Maher became the first high school girls basketball coach in New York state history to reach 800 wins.

High school basketball coach and player dismissed after their team allegedly hurled antisemitic rhetoric against opponent

A girls’ public high school basketball coach and one of the team’s players have been dismissed after antisemitic comments were made to the opposing private Jewish school team during a game last week, according to a statement from the school system and the mayor of Yonkers, New York.

Fairport's Scott Fitch wins gold medal as coach of U16 USA Basketball

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has come threefold for Scott Fitch. The longtime Fairport boys basketball coach won his third gold medal as an assistant for USA Basketball's Men's U16 national team in Merida, Mexico, where they won the FIBA Men’s U16 Americas Championships in June.

Class all-stars for Section 9 and players of the year, the BCANY coaches of the year, and Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association all-stars.

Boys BCANY All-Star Game 

The BCANY All-Star Game featured boys who were picked to either the first or second team All-Section IV all-star teams. The orange team outscored the blue 6-0 in overtime to win 115-109 in the Second Annual BCANY Section 4 Boys’ all-star game at Elmira College.

Girls BCANY All-Star Game

The BCANY All-Star Game featured girls who were picked to either the first or second team All-Section IV all-star teams. In the end the Orange team picked up a 104-83 win over the Blue Team during the Second Annual BCANY Section IV Boys’ and Girls’ basketball all-star game at Elmira College.

A high school basketball coach is still
out $10,000 after Southwest canceled a
flight and left his whole team stranded in
Las Vegas for 5 days over Christmas.
They ended up chartering a bus to drive
18 hours home in the snow.

CBA boys basketball coach reaches 550 career wins

Christian Brothers Academy boys basketball coach Buddy Wleklinski has racked up 550 victories in his nearly 40 years coaching at the school. That places him third among all active Section III boys basketball coaches.

The Irondequoit boys basketball season starts at home Friday night against Pittsford Sutherland, and it will be the last with Chris Cardon at the helm. The Hall-of-Fame coach has decided his 37th season leading Irondequoit will be the final one in a career that has earned him widespread respect.
